* Ribonuclease III family signature *
*************************************
Escherichia coli ribonuclease III (EC 3.1.26.3) (gene rnc) [1] is an enzyme
that digests double-standed RNA. It is involved in the processing of ribosomal
RNA precursors and of some mRNAs. Fission yeast pac1 [2] is a ribonuclease
that probably inhibits mating and meiosis by degrading a specific mRNA
required for sexual development.
These two enzymes are evolutionary related and share regions of sequence
similarity; one of which is a perfectly conserved stretch of 11 residues which
we use as a signature pattern.
-Consensus pattern: H-N-E-R-L-E-F-L-G-D-S
-Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
-Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
-Last update: December 1991 / First entry.
